Just found out that I will be interning with the Public Affairs office next semester! To (productively?) distract myself from stressing over finals I’ve decided to start up my brand new student blog! (Can you tell how excited I am?!)  Next semester I plan on starting a video series called Head2Toe where you can watch me explore health organizations and programs in Oswego, campus and city-wide! This blog will act as a supplement to the series, where I’ll share my own experiences and fun things like great workout songs and recipes!

Wait, GISH-what?

Hello everyone! It’s been a while since I have updated. My life as a college student has been crazy and I have barely had time to breathe. I’m sure all of you have been the same, what with midterms and studying and partying.

But this entry is going to be about something that I’m sure many of you have no idea about.

This past week I participated in something called GISHWHES or the Greatest International Scavenger Hunt the World Has Ever Seen. It’s pronounced [Gee-shuh-wez] for those of you who want to go yell it at the tops of your lungs. This is basically an event where teams all over the world complete various items to get points.

Now this isn’t a normal scavenger hunt like “Find a lawn gnome in someone’s yard and take a picture.” No, the items for this are more like, “Carve out a some squash, place them on your feet and go for a nice jog in the middle of a busy sidewalk.”

Needless to say this week was nuts and so much fun. I met many new friends and we all bonded over the total craziness that was GISHWHES.

Now you are probably saying, “Hannah, why would you subject yourself to that?” Well first off, it is fun to make an idiot of yourself every once in a while. I mean, how many people can say that they walked around a grocery store with 50 stuffed animals in their cart? I can.

Second of all, it is run by my favorite actor, Misha Collins. Who happened to be on my shirt for my first vlog entry. He is from Supernatural and is completely crazy and wonderful. While he is a total nut he is one of the most caring people I’ve ever had the pleasure to meet.

He is knee deep in all different kinds of charities and is always trying to raise money for people in need. His main charity is Random Acts of Kindness and he always is encouraging people to donate money and to commit random acts of kindness.

And it just so happens that one of the items for GISHWHES was to film yourself doing a Random Act of Kindness. My friend and I did this item and we went out with all the athletes to rake leaves for the elderly. That’s my wonderful tennis team in the photo!

 

Which leads to the third reason which is that most of the proceeds go to Random Acts which is wonderful because there are thousands of people across the globe that are participating in this and we raise great amounts of money!

Another thing that Misha used GISHWHES for was to break the world record of the most pledges to Random Acts of Kindness. The previous record was about 73,000. Misha wanted to not only break this record but smash it and shatter it by reaching 100,000 pledges. And as of last night at midnight(the end of the hunt) we had gotten over 104,000 pledges. Things like that just totally amaze me. How so many people can come together and make such a difference. I’m so proud of all my fellow GISHWHESIANS(that’s what we call ourselves)

Lastly the prize for the first place team is that they will be flown to Scotland to spend the night in a haunted castle with Misha, all expenses paid for. I mean who wouldn’t want to hang out in a giant Scottish castle with their favorite actor?!

So that’s a short entry over why I’m in love with GISHWHES. And I really wish I could share pictures and videos with you right now but I’m not allowed to until the winners are picked! As soon as that happens I’ll be sure to post enough photos to make your sides split with laughter.

I encourage you all to look into it for next year! I promise it will at least be an amazing experience and at most it will completely change your life! Who knows who you’ll meet!

the Oswego Nebula: A Star is Born

There are always a lot of events that happen on campus every single day, but SUNY Oswego’s Department of Communication Studies definitely takes the cake with their Media Summit.

The Dr. Lewis B. O’Donnell Media Summit is an annual event that gathers students, faculty, and the like to the campus of SUNY Oswego to listen to the stories of former alumni and other important people in the industry. Not only is it an amazing opportunity for students to hear about their potential futures and the business they will be entering but it is an amazing networking event where everyone can connect and speak to one another.

This years Media Summit had the theme of ‘A Star is Born’ which brought familiar faces to the panel such as Garrick Utley of Meet the Press fame, Kevin Torres- award winning backpack journalist at KUSA, Jackie Robinson- recently retired WSTM News Anchor, Dennis Mueller- documentary filmmaker, and Edward Wyckoff Williams- columnist and political analyst. The event also brought many other important people for the Career Connector segment, where students were allowed to network with people who are already in the industry.

I remember attending my first Media Summit my Freshman year. It  was located in the Sheldon Hall Ballroom and barely fit enough people. While it was still very well done back then, the event it has evolved into is an amazing production. This year, like last year, the Summit was located in the Waterman Theatre of Tyler Hall. Every single seat in the theatre was taken up and some were even left standing. The panelists talked about everything from the future of the industry, to giving advice for students who are about to graduate and break out into the field. My personal favorite part of this years Summit was being able to hear the stories of each panelist and how they got their foot in the industry.

Of course, what would a post by me be without a little plug for WTOP10-TV, who put on an AMAZING Red Carpet Show for the Media Summit (in HD of course!). It was amazing seeing how we went from the Red Carpet show last year, which was a last minute throw together, to what we did this year after weeks of planning.

While I am feeling a little bittersweet about just having attended my last Media Summit, I am so glad that SUNY Oswego was able to provide me with this for my all four years here!

An Introduction!

Hey guys, I’m Dan Guglielmo.

I was on the Web Content team last year for SUNY Oz but this year I’m now blogging!

To give you guys a brief introduction of who I am, I’m a Sophomore here with a major in Cognitive Science and a Health Science minor.  As I said, I went to this college last year and I really do like it here.  I love living in such a great example of a “college town” as well as having our campus literally right next to the lake.

I’ll be posting on here with regularity once campus activities start occurring once again (we seem to be in a drought since the 3LAU concert?), and I’ll express what I enjoyed and maybe even disliked.

What’s on TV tonight?

It’s been a very busy couple of months here at SUNY Oswego. In between being a Teaching Assistant, Communication Studies Lab Assistant, Underwriting and Editing Director at WTOP and taking 4 classes, life hasn’t decided to slow down for me.

I’ve taken on a lot of roles at SUNY Oswego, but I honestly love every single one. Lately, I’ve been spending a lot of my free time managing two departments at WTOP 10-TV the Student Run Television station on campus. For the past 3 years, WTOP has been my second home. I spend so much time there that I’ve often wondered why I did not have a bunk tucked secretly away in our storage closet.

A fact that only a few people know about me is that I had originally been admitted to SUNY Oswego as a Journalism major. I had planned on becoming a world-renowned journalist for Rolling Stone magazine. Instead, when I came up for my tour, I was shown the WTOP studio. It was love at first sight. I knew right then and there that I would HAVE to change my major to Broadcasting and Mass Communication. I wanted to learn everything about television and how stuff like that worked. With that being said, WTOP welcomes people from EVERY major with or without any experience!

I was not very active at WTOP my first year at Oswego. I had done a couple of technical positions for Live News, but it wasn’t until my second semester Sophomore year when I began to participate more. I had decided to expand past the world of News and into Live Sports and ultimately, Underwriting. Being super active in WTOP really helped me in the long run because when the time came, I had decided that I wanted to become a part of the WTOP Executive Board.  I got extremely lucky and became the Underwriting Director my Junior year. It was my first leadership position since High School and it was for something I was very passionate about. This year, I was able to maintain my position as Underwriting Director, but I also got to add Editing Director to the plate as well. It is a big job for one person, but I think it all appears to be swimming right along.

The other week I decided that I wanted to take some fun pictures at the studio. I was lucky enough to grab pictures of News and a Sports show known as Oswego Sports Update.
