Fun Weekend
I had a productive and fun weekend all in one!
Saturday I worked at Pathfinder all day and then went to the Men’s Hockey game vs. Geneseo. Unfortunately we didn’t win, and I missed our first goal of the game, but the second goal we had was amazing. It was a shot from pretty far out and was exciting to see. It was my first hockey game this season and even though we lost it was nice to see the school spirit again!
After the game I went to Greene’s to see Ockham’s Razor perform. They are so entertaining to listen to and so talented! I had few classes with Claire while she was here and never knew she could sing like that! Why’d you keep it hidden from me all those years girl?! 🙂
Today, I spent a good 5 or so hours in the library writing a research paper for my Chinese Art class but then went to the movies to see the much talked about Twilight. I really did not think I was going to be impressed by the movie but I was definitely wrong. It was a really nice storyline and it sets you up for the sequel really well. Loved it!
Going home on Tuesday for Thanksgiving! I’m really excited to get a small break. I think everyone is! Enjoy your break everyone!
Sunday breaks!
I’ve been doing homework pretty much all day and figured I would take a break and write on here, since it has been forever.
I wish I knew what I wanted to do with my life. Some people grow up knowing what they want to be and where they want to go. I am not one of those people. When I was in Vermont, I met someone who told me that I think about the future too much and that I need to live in the present. How can I not think about the future though? I’m graduating in May and have to decide if I’m going to grad school and if not I have to worry about applying for jobs. I’m very indecisive. It is hard for me to imagine myself not coming back to Oswego next fall. I did not believe people when they told me four years of college goes by so quickly.
I have a b-e-a-utiful Christmas tree in my room. My mom surprised me last week and came up for a visit and brought my tree up! I love it! I love this time of year. Yes, I could do without the cold weather but I love Thanksgiving and Christmas. I love having my brothers and sister around at the same time. Amy and Jeff are moved out and families of their own (Amy has 4 daughters, Jeff has a daughter and a son), Paul goes to school at UAlbany and Christi lives in Florida…in the nice weather! It’s fun to all hang out together! Going home feels like going on vacation. When I am there it is so easy to relax. Home is a really small town (I may have mentioned that already!) and a log cabin on a hill. It’s pretty perfect.
Okay, so before I go back to Sunday things, I just want to give a shout out to my fellow Pathfinder Dining expert Rebecca- told you I would!
Election Day
It’s coming!
I am voting for the first time this year. I could have voted 4 years ago but did not understand the importance of my vote, or take the time to become knowledgeable of the candidates or issues. This year I have taken the time to do just that. For COM416, my Public Relations capstone, we are working throughout the semester to create an information campaign about a political issue. The issue I have been researching for this semester is Education (the No Child Left Behind Act, charter schools and vouchers) and during my research I became extremely interested in reading what Barack Obama and John McCain had to say about all of these issues.
I understand why I did not vote when I was 18, and why I find it so important 4 years later. I am not saying that the issues and voting were not important 4 years ago, but I think a person can grow up so much in 4 years. I understand more about the government and more in general now than I did when I was 18, but also I will be graduating soon and taxes, job opportunities and other things are so much more relevant to me now.
Something else I have found interesting through all of the debates and campaigning is how different my family feels about each of the candidates. My family is completely split between the two and I love the heated conversations we get into about each of them.
Personally I will be voting for Barack Obama and am very proud to say so. I think there definitely needs to be a change in the United States and I think he will give that to us. Either way you plan on voting, I think it is great that you are doing so. It is so important and obviously it can change the future of this country.
(I have also really enjoyed celebrity PSAs like Five Friends and Tina Fey’s amazing impersonations of Sarah Palin.)
Some things I have been loving lately…
The movies. Recently I watched Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, Eagle Eye and Burn After Reading and loved them all! I love the theater in Oswego. The sign on the outside and the high ceilings make it so classic.
The new cardio room in Cooper. There are TVs on every machine, and it makes working out so much easier for me. I know I shouldn’t need entertainment while I’m working out, but it is so nice to be able to watch TV while I’m on the machine!
Oswego in the fall. The color of the trees in Oswego right now are amazing. Apple picking, cider, apple pies. I love the smell of the air. It’s not too hot and not too cold. It’s perfect!
Baseball playoffs. This year is different for me because the Yankees aren’t still playing, but I still love the suspense of who is going to win it all. I guess if the Yanks can’t win it all I’m hoping for the Rays to go all the way.
I think I just like the mood I’m in in the fall. I like this time the most!
Rain, rain go away!
As an intern for the Lifestyles Center, it has been my job to promote the Center through Facebook. Learning the “new” Facebook has been a challenge, but I think it is hilarious to see how many people’s lives have been drastically changed because the layout has changed. I never realized how useful Facebook could actually be for networking and promotion. It has been very useful in notifying people of upcoming events, explaining how to become involved with the center, and to simply let people know what we do there. (We promote healthy and responsible lifestyle choices!) We have a Lifestyles Center, SUNY Oswego Fan page and also an Oswego Lifestyles group and the number of members increases every day. It really has been exciting to see.
It is SO cold today, but I love it! The cold weather is nice after it being hot out. I used to hate the cold weather, but there’s something about being able to bundle up that is fun. (Plus, I’m not going to lie- it’s really funny to see the freshmen react to the Oswego wind and then respond with “Welcome to Oswego!”) I was there once too though. THE RAIN however, I could do without! We have enough water in the lake, we don’t need anymore!
I’m usually at a loss for words (which does not happen much) on how to end posts, so I’ll just finish with my most recent favorite quotation. My “favorite quotation” change pretty much every day!
“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit” -Aristotle
Grad School
I forgot how much work it really is to just apply for school! After all, it has been four years since I have even thought about applying to school, let alone actually filling out the applications. I just figured out that I want to do last semester, so now I have to decide where I want to go and visit the campuses. I’ve visited a few (University of Rochester, St. Rose) but there are a few more I want to go see! Visiting the school is really important for me in deciding where I want to go. When I saw Oswego in the SUNY booklet as a senior in highschool, I said NO WAY because of all of the things I had heard about the snow. I decided that I wanted to major in PR, so I decided to visit anyway. I visited in October (I remember because it was so windy!) and it was so beautiful I just had to come here. 🙂 But anyway, the grad school search is kicking my butt and just thinking about all of it is really tiring, but really exciting at the same time! I can’t believe that at this time next year, I’ll be at a different school. It’s all starting to sink in that I won’t be here next year, which makes me sad (and jealous of everyone who will be back!) but also makes me excited for what is about to come! I’ll keep ya’ posted on the search!
I miss Orientation!!
I’ve been in Vermont for the last two and a half weeks at an internship and they have been the most quiet weeks of the summer. While I’m learning a lot, I miss orientation! I miss the students, the parent’s questions and my A-Team. Most of all I miss the Laker Leaders. It was my first summer in Oswego and I miss the lake and amazing sunsets! I cannot wait to get back on the 17th. 6 days! I think what I am looking forward to most is seeing how the first-year students all come together their first day here and how they interact with each other. I really hope they love Oswego! 🙂
My first post!
Hey all! This is my first post on the SUNY Oswego Blog! Today we just finished our third, first-year orientation program and it went really well! I’m a Laker Leader (Orientation Leader) for the summer, and things are great so far. We have a great Orientation Staff and along with help from the administrative offices and advisors on campus, we have managed to throw together a program that most seem to enjoy! The Class of 2012 seems really excited to be here and have been wonderful to spend time with.
This is my first time staying in Oswego for the summer months and I am definitely regretting not staying here sooner! It’s beautiful right now! Today was 94 degrees outside, a little too hot for me, but the lake was amazing today. Day’s like today make dealing with Oswego snow definitely worth it! 🙂
