An Editorial, If You Will

This is just a quick summary of a few circumstances that I wish were a bit different, and I have been meaning to share for quite some time, actually. What I would first like to cover is the Education program. I am an Education major, and as an Education student, I am required to complete Practicum hours, which means that I observe a classroom each semester, and it really puts me at a severe disadvantage. Despite the hours that I put into that each week, I only get one to two credits (two for Block 3, since that is either a full day or two half-days, unlike Blocks 1 and 2, which are only one half-day), instead of the full three. What that means is that unless I kill myself by taking six courses, I am not getting the full fifteen credits that I should be getting, and I’m sure that I’m not the only Education student who feels this way.

Last semester was okay, because I got two credits for my Practicum, and I got four credits for my ADO 310 class, so it worked out to fifteen, but usually it doesn’t. Considering how many hours are put into completing a Practicum assignment, a full three credits should be given (more for third block). I feel like I’m busier than most students probably are, yet I’m getting less credits. Tell me, how is that fair? It isn’t fair.

Secondly, did anyone else receive an email over the summer telling you that your financial aid package had been slightly decreased due to the need to cut budgets? I did, and I was also reprimanded for having ordered too much last semester via ILLIAD, for the same reason. Allow me to entertain this question for a minute – if all of these budget cuts are necessary, then where is the money coming from to build this new science building? Where did the money come from to build the Village, something that was utterly unnecessary and isn’t even close to anything on campus. If we had that money, why didn’t we use it more productively, like put air-conditioning in the residence halls and the academic building, perhaps? I just feel like I am being affected for reasons that don’t affect me. I am not living in the townhouses, and I most likely won’t be here when the science building is finished (and even if I were, I’m not a science major). Anyway, enough moaning for now, I suppose. I’m sorry about that; I have just been meaning to write this for a while now.

Organization… What a Concept

This semester, I’m trying out something new. I’m toting my laptop to almost all of my classes. Some students (and teachers) frown upon their use in the classroom, but I’m all for it. I take my notes on my laptop and to be honest with you, I find it to be a lot more organized and clear.

Here’s an example of what my notes look like during a typical class, like BRC 320 (Programming, Programs and Effects):

I have Microsoft Word 2008 on my MacBook, which allows me to take notes on my Mac as if I were writing in a notebook. See that blue looseleaf paper in the bottom left hand corner of the screen cap? That’s the notebook layout, which changes a Word document into a…. you guessed it, notebook. You can add flags to points that are important, like I’ve done on mine to signify important points that will be on the test. You can also doodle, which comes in handy for classes with graphs like economics. You can even do a voice recording that coincides with your points! Overall, I’m loving this new transition I’m making towards using my laptop as an organization aid for my classes. But I must advise to double-check with your professors before bringing a laptop. Some may prohibit them from their classrooms to prevent you from….

Gearing Up

Wow, this semester is going to be yet another toughie; I can already tell. Not that anyone would really care to know all of the specifics about my medical life, I’m sure, but I started my semester out with a pilonidal cyst, which, from what I understand, is pretty much the most painful kind of cyst one could get, and believe me, I would know, as it was basically the most amount of pain I’ve ever been in in my whole life, but thankfully, I am just about fully healed now and back on my feet, so to speak.

I haven’t even been to my Literacy class yet, because last week, I wasn’t doing too well, and yesterday, I had to go back to the surgeon for a follow-up. That is quite daunting, because despite my attempts to find out how much work I have missed via emailing the professor, she has not returned the email, so I’m so afraid I’m going to walk in there on Wednesday only to discover that I have a hundred or so pages of reading to do, which would be quite unfortunate considering the fact that I am reading Clarissa by Samuel Richardson this semester for English 365. In case you don’t know what that is, it is a 1500 page book, so it’s going to take me forever to get through it.

As always, there is so much reading to do, and as always, there is so much writing, which I actually don’t mind as much as the reading. The reading is far more time-consuming, and it can be quite mundane when it isn’t really anything that you want to be reading. Every semester, I fool myself into thinking that I can afford to bring books for pleasure up here to read during downtime, and what I forget is that that is something that I get incredibly sparingly, but hey, it’s one step closer, right? I took my Safe Schools Healthy Students exam this previous Saturday and passed the class, so little by little, I am getting there – to being an English teacher, that is. Anyone else care to share how their semester is faring thus far?

A No Snuggie Zone

I have this argument with Tumbo ALL the time. Real men don’t wear snuggies! There is just not room in distinguished men closets to hang that up!  Anyway I was in my Comm 100 and my professor wanted to make a point on rhetoric. We ended up watching Julius Caesar  and the speech by Mark Anthony after his death. So he appeared on my projector like so:

All I could think about was “snuggie snuggie snuggie”. This to me is acceptable wear. It looks distinguished! There is a nice little clasp on the right shoulder to keep things in perspective. “He’s and honorable man”.

But this…. I simply can’t get with the program on snuggies. “He was too ambitious” , it doesnt work for me.

To me a snuggie is a backwards robe as I try to explain to Tumbo , and that makes as much sense as wearing your underwear backwards.

In any event I did recover from this snuggie dilemma  to get the point of clip we were watching (hey mom I’m learning!)

The Secret: Daily Teachings Jan 10- Jan 20

Jan 10, Day 17: if you are feeling really good, negative thoughts and words are not on the same frequency as you, so you don’t even have to try to stop them because all good things just pour out of you. So, the fastest way to be more positive is to watch how you are feeling, rather than trying to monitor your thought and words. You are the only one who has control of your feelings, so start to get in touch with how you are feeling, and then deliberately focus on intensifying a good feeling within you.
Jan 11, Day 18: When henry ford was bringing his vision of the motor vehicle into our world, people around him ridiculed him and thought he had gone mad to pursue such a “wild” vision. Henry ford knew much more than the people who ridiculed him. He knew The Secret and he knew the law of the universe. “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, either way you are right” ~ Henry Ford

Jan 12, Day 19: No one would ever deliberately attract anything unwanted. Without the knowledge of The Secret, it is easy to see how some unwanted things may have occurred in your life or other people’s lives. Its simply came from a lack of awareness of the great creative power of our thoughts.

Jan 13, Day 20:
Trust your instincts. It’s the universe inspiring you. It’s the universe communicating with you on the receiving frequency. If you have an intuitive or instinctive feeling, follow it, and you will find that the Universe is magnetically moving you to receive what you asked for.
Jan 14, Day 21: The reason you have to love You is because it is impossible to feel good if you don’t love You. When you feel bad about yourself, you are blocking all the Love and all the good that the Universe has for you.
Jan 15, Day 22: All you require is You, and your ability to think things into being. Everything that has been invented and created throughout the history of Humankind began with one thought. From that one thought a way was made, and it manifested from the invisible into the visible. “Take the first step in Faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase. Just take the first step” ~ Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Jan 16, Day 23: It doesn’t matter who you are or where you are, the law of attraction is forming your entire life experience, and this all-powerful law is doing that through your thoughts. You are the one who calls the law of attraction into action, and you do it through your thoughts.
Jan 17, Day 24: you can let your imagination go wild with a vision board, and place pictures of all the things you want, and pictures of how you want your life to be. Make sure you put the vision board in a place where you see it and look at it every day. Feel the feelings of having those things now. As you receive, and feel gratitude for receiving, you can remove pictures and add new ones. This is a wonderful way to introduce children to the law of attraction. “Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming attraction” ~ Albert Einstein

Jan 18, Day 25: Fear is the most debilitating emotion that there is, and every one of us can live a life without fear. The key to absolute freedom and joy for each and every one of us is to let go of fear. When you understand that fear puts on a frequency of attracting more fearful events and circumstances into your life, you will understand how important it is to shift yourself. People are in fear of being late, of losing their job, of paying the bills, of getting sick and the list goes on. But the fear of those things is actually summoning them to us. The law of attraction of impersonal and whatever we focus on with feeling is bringing it to us. When fearful thoughts come, stamp them out immediately. Send them on their way and replace them with anything that makes you feel good.
Jan 19, Day 26: When you say “I am,” the words that follow are summoning creation with a mighty force, because you are stating it with a mighty force, because you are declaring it to be fact. You are stating it with a mighty force, because you are declaring it to be fact. You are stating it with certainty. And so immediately after you say, “I am tired” or “I am broke” or “I am sick” or “I am late” or I am overweight” or “I am old,” the Genie says, “Your wish is my command”
Jan 20, Day 27: Every single person deserves to live a wonderful life, and they have the power to do that through the law of attraction. When you tend to your happiness and joy, something wonderful happens. You begin to overflow with joy, and every single person that you come into contact with is touched by your joy. One person in joy brings so much joy to the world through the magnificent matrix of our Universe. The power within each of us is unfathomable when focused in the direction of all good for all.

Good Friends

Its no secret that life is hard. It starts off pretty rough when you really think about it, the first thing you do fresh out the womb is cry. What makes life enjoyable are those three things above though. Friends really is primary the other two come when you have close friends. It always amazes me how the worst possible situations can be made to at least be a bearable experience if not memorable “remember that time” story.

I am truly blessed because these are first hand experiences I’m speaking on. I have the best friends in the world and that’s why I’m happy so often. This weekend was more of the same. My friends came to Oswego so of course I had to show them to a good time. I was the host trying to do the most, making sure that they had as much fun as possible. The weekend was about them , but err then it wasn’t. What ended up happening was that they made my weekend.I’m so happy these dudes were here to join us and turn it up. The camaraderie , the jokes , the failed night turned into the joke of the weekend. Yeah, I’m grateful that I can say those guys as my friends. The LEAST I could do is let them know how much love I have for them. The LEAST!

The Wonderful Land Of OZ

Its been a fast, akward week adjusting back into the swing of Oswego life. The waking up for classes, wadeing through snow, buying tons of candy and ramen from walmart, and seeing old friends. Though all these things may sound great, getting throught the first week is only like taking a step out side in a hail storm. Dispite what lies ahead I am off on a good foot. I can manage my work load so that it doesnt snowball out of control if I stay on this yellow brick road I can make it.
