A V-Date in Oswego

The Princeton Review and USA Today recently named SUNY Oswego a Best Value College, but with Valentines Day only a blink away that won’t be the only value Oswego students are looking for.

Let’s face it, most college students could stand to benefit from a good deal, between the cost of recently purchased text books, pesky parking tickets and late night orders of Zonies and Wontons their isn’t much money left over to spare.

One of the Oswego’s most recent additions The Wall is an all inclusive rock climbing experience. -The well versed climbers can try their hand at bouldering, while those just looking for good amateur fun can opt for top ropes.

 

The Dine:

With an intimate but upbeat ambiance, The Red Sun Fire Roasting Co. is perfect for the down to earth couple who just likes to enjoy each others company while not breathing down each others neck (fella’s the TV’s by the bar allow you a chance to sneak a peek at the latest scores).

The Wine:

Affordable, fun and classic, buy a few games and show each other what you’re made of. Bowling gives couples the opportunity to be active and engaged without having to worry about the awkward dead moments in between topics. (let her win the first two, then show her whose boss in the third and final games)


The Dine:

If you are in the seemingly proverbial “it’s complicated” area, Ruby Tuesday may just be right up your alley. A relatively affordable menu, a large variation of food choices to satisfy even the pickiest eater and a wine menu to turn it up a notch if the mood calls for such an occasion. Meet halfway and order the “Four Way Sampler”

Not for feign at heart. Enter Canales when your romance game is ready for the big leagues. Everything from the exterior to the interior says “ Happy Valentines Day”.  This is dinner and sophistication done right. The low light, warm colors and cozy seating area is just right to discuss why you guys are made for each other. With filling portions you wont even mind when they reach over with their fork into your plate.

 

These are just a few of the many ways to celebrate this special occasion with someone special. Always remember the celebration and expectations should be in the level of effort and not the money spent.

The Way to a Man’s Heart

It’s an age-old saying, but it still rings true today. I have yet to meet a guy who can’t be won over with a delicious home-cooked meal, or at least a meal that he enjoys. I’m not sure the home-cooked factor is even an important ingredient in this recipe.

So what’s a girl to do for Valentine’s Day, the holiday of hearts and mushy-gushy romance? Cook, of course!

Dustin is usually the cook in our relationship, which I am eternally grateful for. I have the capabilities of cooking, but I don’t enjoy doing it one bit, especially after a long 12-hour work day. It should also be known that Dustin and I don’t really celebrate Valentine’s Day that much. He’s a guy, so he believes it’s a stupid holiday that was invented by girls, whereas I believe it was a silly holiday invented by Hallmark. As a result, we just make sure we’re hanging out on that day and do something relatively low-key.

Because Dustin is the main cook, I decided it would be a nice change of pace for him if I donned the chef’s hat. So for the entire weekend, I prepared us two delicious meals, then surprised him with a third on Monday.

Friday kicked off my venture to win over Dustin’s heart by cooking up some delicious chicken. Chicken can be bland or extremely tasty, plus it’s cheap. After all, I am still a college student! Also, it’s important to note that I’m training for a half-marathon, so I can’t eat anything too ridiculously unhealthy. So I headed to FITNESS magazine’s website and whipped up this recipe for terragon chicken. There were a few substitutions, but we stuck to the recipe pretty closely and ended up with a delicious thyme (not terragon) chicken with lots o’ veggies on the side.

On Saturday, Dustin pulled out the stops for a date night and took me out to Ruby Tuesday’s, where we had our first date over two years ago. I had the Parmesan Shrimp Pasta and it was so good, I was tempted to lick my bowl clean.

I took over the cooking duties again on Sunday, this time going Mexican with some chicken tacos! I also found this recipe on FITNESS’ website and my, oh, my, was it delicious! First, I seasoned cut up chicken with salt and pepper and let it cook in a tablespoon of canola oil.

Then I tossed in a bunch of tomatoes, white onion, a jalapeno pepper, a clove of garlic, scallions, lime juice and cilantro to season it up quite nicely.

After everything was mixed in together, I portioned the food on small corn tortillas and dug in! The ingredients gave the chicken a perfect amount of spice and the variety of flavors really gave my taste buds a treat. However, the corn tortillas I bought at Price Chopper were not up to par and kept ripping apart, so Dustin and I ended up feasting on this dish without the wraps. Next time we’re going to give it a go with Tostitos chips and make it a taco salad.

Dustin thought that my cooking duties were over by the time actual Valentine’s Day rolled around, but he was happily mistaken. He works late on Monday nights though, so instead of cooking, I made sure he had one of his favorite foods for dinner….pizza! I was able to order a heart-shaped pepperoni pizza from Cam’s to celebrate the day and Dustin was a happy camper.

Like I said, the way to a man’s heart is definitely through his stomach! I’ll tally this Valentine’s Day in the success column!

Finally Moved into Sheldon

So, I am finally in Sheldon with Ray, and I couldn’t be happier. Beyond the facts that the room is pretty big, has heat and air-conditioning, and we have our own bathroom, this building is so incredibly quiet, and that last bit is what is especially important, since Mackin was so obnoxiously noisy. A couple of weeks ago, for example, a group of about five male residents stampeded down the hallway after two in the morning and shouted, “Everybody wake up!” making an alarm-like sound in the process, and that wasn’t even the weekend; it was a Thursday night.

Sheldon is so gorgeous, and I love the sense of community here; everyone is so friendly and helpful and wanting to meet new people and make new friends. The very first day that we were here, our RA introduced himself, and we have already met four or five residents who introduced themselves, and they were really nice people. Like I said, I couldn’t be happier to be here, especially with Ray.

What about this weather, though? I am a Junior, so this is my third Winter here, and this is the craziest one yet. It is definitely the coldest and the windiest. Thursday, I had two classes, and both were canceled, something that has never happened to me here before, and if Monday is anything like it was today (as in Saturday), then I don’t expect class on Monday, either, because today was exceptionally bad.

I would love to hear from others about how your semesters are going. Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, so hopefully everyone’s will be just as happy as I’m sure mine will be. I’ll be surely writing again soon; until then, take care.
